Googled: The End of the World as We Know It by Ken Auletta | Book review | Books | The Observer

This article soured my enthusiasm for Google a little. I still admire their technical prowess, and all the good they have done immensely. However, I don't appreciate the act first and beg for forgiveness later approach. I realize it's hard to implement the right solution giving all the complicating factors, but that doesn't give one the right to ignore copyright laws and violate people's privacy.

I was working for a Compaq reseller in 2001 and Google was at a conference. They were loving the Alpha 4100 which was one of the most rocking UNIX boxes on the planet at the time.

There are some really great folks on twitter like Roger McGuinn. I have enjoyed much of his music and saw him do a great show at the Turning Point in Piermont, NY. The Turning Point is a very small place and it was an electric performance (circa 1995). Now I see he's a great photographer also.

I like twitter. I'm following smart people and they give me good ideas.

Well, where do I start? A little about me I guess. I was born at Nyack Hospital in Nyack, New York on September 27, 1961 at about 11 AM in the morning. Right now I'm 48 years old and living in Simsubry, CT with my wife Andrea (formerly Andrea K. Welch from Wichita, Kansas). We were blessed with the arrival of Katherine Anne Kubarych on July 6, 2004. Currently I am working as a Programmer/Analyst at Yale University supporting primarily the Association of Yale Alumni, and secondarily the Yale Office of Development.

I have a wide range of interests. I'm a techno-phile who has recently awakened to the wonders of web technology and I'm blown away by Google. I think I'm a Google-phile. Their stuff rocks. I spent a lot of time in the world of enterprise systems, High Perfromance UNIX boxes, small clusters, Multi-protocol SAN (NetApps), yada, yada, yada. I have a new hobby now, complex systems, and am interested in new software design methods to help manage complex information systems, keep them from degrading into complicated, messed up, non-productive information systems, and manage them so that knowledge might emerge from all of the human inputs into the system, perhaps sensor input into the system, and from the component parts. Is that possible? My mottoe is "Let's try it out and see." I may be extremely naive and all I know about complex systems is whatever I've gathered by osmosis through my work, and the small amount of reading that I've done so far.

Another interest I have is dogs. Rusty Canine, aka as "The Little Rustafarian," is the newest additon to our household. We've got a great trainer in Deb Monde who is giving us expert guidance with Rusty. Rusty hails from Tennesee. See yesterday's post (which wasn't really there until today for a photo of Rusty and Katie). Kudos to the folks doing animal rescue down there. Hopefully the south will adopt better spaying and neutering practices and the flow of animals from north to south can slow down. Hopefully industry can be revived in Connecticut and the flow of people out of Connecticut can slow down and even reverse.

It's almost time for me to go to work, and I need to caffeinate myself (I Pray to You Sant Caffeine - John Gorka, great tune, by a great artist) so that's enough of me for now.
